"Every so often, but not often enough, we stumble on a new musical that fills a need we didn't even know we had. THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE is an EXUBERANT, ALTOGETHER ENGROSSING and MOVING socio-pop musical… a witty, sensitive book by ITAMAR MOSES and a score by MICHAEL FRIEDMAN that samples 25 years of hit soul, punk and hip-hop while managing to sound both ORIGINAL and AUTHENTIC.”
Newsday

“A BIG-HEARTED MUSICAL. A natural choice for musical adaptation… The novel SINGS to begin with. The score flows in undulating RIVERS OF SOUL, FUNK, PUNK and RAP, with harmonic clashes and convergences of all of the above that are MICHAEL FRIEDMAN’s own.”
The New York Times

“THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE SOARS. ORIGINAL, FRESH & FASCINATING. ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS OF THE YEAR.  ADAM CHANLER-BERAT proves himself A STAR.”
Huffington Post

“DANIEL AUKIN’s staging is DYNAMIC and ENGAGING. A MUSICAL VALENTINE to a lost era.”
New York Post

“EXTRAORDINARY & TIMELESS. A blood-pumping, heart-thumping show! KYLE BELTRAN is MAGNETIC. Whatever he sings sounds HEAVENLY. A BEAUTIFUL performance by KEVIN MAMBO.”
Variety

“Two FIRST-RATE WORDSMITHS, playwright ITAMAR MOSES and songwriter MICHAEL FRIEDMAN AIM HIGH to leave their personal mark, and take musical theater in BRAVE NEW DIRECTIONS.”
Time Out New York

"A TALENTED CAST at the TOP OF THEIR GAME."
New York Arts Review

Conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin (Bad Jews, 4000 Miles), based on the acclaimed novel by Jonathan Lethem, the soaring new musical The Fortress of Solitude makes its World Premiere at The Public this fall with a dynamite creative team including composer/lyricist Michael Friedman (Love's Labour's Lost, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and bookwriter Itamar Moses ("Boardwalk Empire," The Four of Us).

The Fortress of Solitude is the extraordinary coming-of-age story about 1970s Brooklyn and beyond — of black and white, soul and rap, block parties and blackouts, friendship and betrayal, comic books and 45s. And the story of what would happen if two teenagers obsessed with superheroes believed that maybe, just maybe, they could fly…

The Fortress of Solitude is supported in part by the National Fund for New Musicals, a program of National Alliance for Musical Theatre, with funding from Stacey Mindich Productions – namt.org.
