The Public Theater celebrated its 50th year with a series fo special events throughout the 2005-2006 season. Alongside six productions downtown and two at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, The Public presented The Public TALKS and The Public Sings!

The Public TALKS was a year-long series of cross-disciplinary dialogues and debates with Public Theater actors, writers, and directors. Joined by journalists and cultural commentators, the participants explored different dimensions of the theater's dynamic history ranging from the political and social context of The Public's productions to the creative development of its pioneer artists.

The series took place at different locations throughout Manhattan in partnership with The New School Graduate Writing Program and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School; The 92nd Street Y; Tisch School of the Arts, New York University; El Museo Del Barrio; and The New York Times Talks series.

Directed by James Lapine and featuring legendary Public Theater artists, The Public Sings featured original musical interpretations of shows that engaged the social and political issues of their times and reshaped our experience of American musical theater.
