Julius Caesar (2000)

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Barry Edelstein

Julius Caesar returns triumphantly to Rome after defeating his rival in battle. A soothsayer warns him to beware the Ides of March, but is ignored. Brutus, a military commander and friend of Caesar confides in Cassius his concerns that Caesar may try to crown himself king and destroy the republic. Cassius uses lies and manipulation to draw Brutus into an assassination plot with a group of other powerful Romans. The conspirators lure Caesar to the senate where they stab him to death. At Caesar's funeral, Antony, a loyal friend of Caesar's stirs the crowd with reports of his greatness and generosity. The mob drives the conspirators from the city. Caesar's heir Octavius, with Antony and Lepidus, raise an army to challenge the army of the conspirators camped outside the city. The armies engage, the conspirators are defeated, and Octavius assumes Caesar’s place as leader of Rome.
