Written by David GrimmDirected by Brian Kulick
David Grimm made his playwriting debut at The Public Theater with this production.
Christopher “Kit†Marlowe, playwright of Tamburlaine and The Jew of Malta, is young, reckless and hungry for adventure. He goes to work for Sir Francis Walsingham, spymaster for Queen Elizabeth I and uncle of his friend Thomas Walsingham. Thomas is in love with Kit, but his deep sense of propriety does not allow him to act on those feelings and he is instead seeking a suitably wealthy wife. Kit’s intrigues lead him into the tangled web of Elizabethan politics and religion, and he soon discovers that the adventure he sought has come with a price. Even Thomas is unable to extricate his friend from his uncle’s schemes, and Kit becomes the victim of the powerful forces swirling around him.
This production received a Hewes Design Award nomination for Costume Design.
