Dogeaters
Written by Jessica HagedornDirected by Michael Greif
Filipino-American writer Jessica Hagedorn adapted her own novel, a multilayered exploration of Filipino culture, for the stage.
In Manila in 1982, gay prostitute Joey Sands witnesses the murder of a political opponent of the Marcos regime. Swirling around that event are political intrigues, an international film festival, and the return of a young ex-pat, Rio, for her grandmother’s funeral. From slum shacks and sex clubs to television studios and decadent country clubs, the story weaves a fascinating tapestry of the highs and lows of life in the Philippines.
This production received Lucille Lortel Award nominations for Outstanding Director, Outstanding Sound Design, Outstanding Featured Actress (Ching Valdes-Aran), and Outstanding Featured Actor (Alex Mapa), and Hewes Design Award nominations for Scenic Design and Lighting Design.
