References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot

Written by Jose Rivera
Directed by Jo Bonney

Rosie Perez made her Public Theater debut in this production.

Benito has just returned from the Persian Gulf War to Barstow, California and his wife Gabriela. Lonely and working at a dead-end job, she has been taking adult education classes and is sick of living half a life waiting for her husband to come back from his tours of duty. Benito, a career soldier, just wants to come home to food in the kitchen and a warm bed while he serves for another nine years to earn his pension. The two spar until Gabriela discovers the painful secret from the war hiding beneath his tough exterior. The scenes of their intense and complicated relationship are bookended by surrealistic scenes in which Gabriela’s housecat is seduced by a coyote under a moon with a striking resemblance to Salvador Dali.
