Darius Wheeler is an unscrupulous art dealer who has come into possession of what he believes to be a priceless ancient Japanese pillow book. Unfortunately, the book was actually written as a novel by his overworked assistant John. Panicked, John enlists a friend and art restorer to doctor the pillow book, and Darius woos an art historian who authenticates the text and falls into bed with the wily dealer. Also digging into the provenance of the pillow book are a reporter intent on catching Darius in a lie, a scholar trying to boost his own reputation, and mysterious woman. Schemes and deceptions abound in this complex tale of truth and representation.
