Helen
Written by Ellen McLaughlinDirected by Tony Kushner
This play offers a modern twist on an alternate myth of Helen of Troy, in which Paris took a copy of her to Troy and the real queen escaped to Egypt where she waited out the Trojan War.
Helen, Queen of Sparta, has been waiting seventeen years in her lush Cairo hotel room for her husband Meneleus to return from the Trojan War. Her lovely surroundings are not much more than a pretty prison, and she muses on society’s relationship to women and to beauty while being waited on by her Egyptian servant and receiving visits from Io and the goddess Athena, until Meneleus comes to free her.
This production received Hewes Design Award nominations for Scenic Design, Lighting Design and Costume Design.
