Boston Marriage
Written by David MametDirected by Karen Kohlhaas
Kate Burton made her Public Theater debut in this production. The play's original run was extended due to its success.
Anna and Claire have lived together for some time on the fringes of upper-class Victorian society. Anna’s preference for women has not stopped her from acquiring a wealthy lover who has provided her with a small fortune and a large emerald. Meanwhile, Claire has fallen in lust with a respectable young woman and asks for Anna’s help in snaring her. The women snipe at one another, occasionally interrupting the vicious wordplay to taunt their Scottish maid Catherine. However, unbeknownst to Claire and Anna, their new romances share a connection that may bring their carefully constructed world crashing down around them.
This production received a Lucille Lortel nomination for Outstanding Costume Design.
