New York City is a creative hothouse where artists from around the globe come together and develop new hybrids evolving from their musical roots. This synthesis is on full display in the music of Pankovits and Deutsch, who integrate folk traditions and storytelling into their energetic and virtuosic bands.
Hungarian-born Jazz Vocalist Nikolett Pankovits makes a Magical Debut with Magia, a gorgeous and highly personal collection of traditional Hungarian songs and pop Hits, American Songbook Standards and originals. Since settling in New York City in 2010, she has forged a singular body of music, melding the traditional songs and standards of her youth with a luscious array of Latin American rhythms. Pure, lithe and warm, her arresting voice is alive to countless shades of loss, longing, ache, and regret. Grounded in the Old World but illuminated by the cultural mélange of the Americas, Pankovits’ music is an act of alchemy by a singer with an emotionally charged sound and story unlike anyone else on the today’s jazz scene.
Trumpeter/composer Josh Deutsch’s Pannonia plays “traditional folk music from an imaginary country.” Formed in 2011, Pannonia's debut album, Another Time, Another Place was released in 2014, and was an editors pick in Downbeat magazine, which calls it "a well-planned, beautifully executed program" and praises the "superb solos," "incredible humor" and "deep compositions." In their latest set of music, Pannonia adds narration of new stories, weaving together a multi-media show that connects with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
