About Public Works: Public Works is a major initiative of The Public Theater that seeks to engage the people of New York by making them creators and not just spectators. Each year, working with partner organizations in all five boroughs, Public Works invites members of diverse communities to participate in theater workshops, to attend classes, to become involved in the daily life of the Public, and, most importantly, to join in the creation of ambitious works of participatory theater. Pioneering a new model of engagement, Public Works is rooted in longitudinal, multi-year relationships with its community partners. Partners for the first five years of Public Works are Fortune Society (Queens), Brownsville Recreation Center (Brooklyn), DreamYard (Bronx), Military Resilience Project (all boroughs), Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (Brooklyn), Casita Maria, (Bronx), Children's Aid Society (Manhattan), and Domestic Workers United (all boroughs). Under the leadership of Director Laurie Woolery and Artistic Director Lear Debessonet, Public Works deliberately blurs the line between professional artists and community members to create theater that is not only for the people, but by and of the people as well.
These partnerships will culminate in the summer of 2017, when Public Works will produce an adaptation of As You Like It in Central Park. This music theatre event will feature 200 people from our 5 community partners, plus cameo appearances by 5 of New York City’s most exciting neighborhood-based community art organizations. Bringing professional artists from the Public Theater into the community, Public Works carries forward this theater's decades-long mandate to cultivate new connections and new models of engagement between artists and audiences.
