Following a sold-out run of Medea in 2011, Satoshi Miyagi and his company SPAC return to New York with another literary masterpiece, Othello. Miyagi re-tells Shakespeare’s famed tragedy through noh theater’s most distinct storytelling structure, mugen noh, or a play that features a spirit. Told from the perspective of Othello’s wife Desdemona, who comes back as a ghost after her death, Miyagi’s production is replete with stunning masks and costumes as well as powerful live music and chanting.
The Shizuoka Performing Arts Center
The Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC) was founded in 1995 by the Shizuoka Prefectural government and is one of the first publicly funded performing arts organizations in Japan that employs actors-in-residence and technical and production staff for its own facility. SPAC creates original theatrical productions and invites companies and individuals from around the world to its space. The resident theater company of SPAC has been invited to perform all over the world at prestigious venues and festivals. Miyagi was appointed General Artistic Director of SPAC in 2007, succeeding internationally-known theater director Tadashi Suzuki.
