This spring, award winning playwright Rogelio Martinez brings his new drama about one of the most fascinating and surprising moments of international diplomacy to The Public Studio. Based on the true events surrounding the groundbreaking table tennis tournament that marked a decisive new chapter in US-China relations, PING PONG is the story of the extraordinary young man who played the game that changed the world and the political actors who were playing him.  With Nixon and Mao on either side of the court, free spirited hippie Glenn Cowan reaches across the net to usher in a fragile new friendship between two great countries in this funny, incisive and wildly imaginative new play about the little moments of history that set up the big ones.

Rogelio Martinez won the first-ever Mid-Career Fellowship at the Lark Theater Company. His play, Born in East Berlin will be given a workshop at the Arden in March 2015. His other plays include Wanamaker’s Pursuit (Arden), When Tang Met Laika (Sloan Grant/Denver Center/Perry Mansfield), Fizz (NEA/ TCG Grant/ Besch Solinger at the Ohio, New Theater Miami), I Regret She’s Made of Sugar (winner of the 2001 Princess Grace Award), Union City... (E.S.T, James Hammerstein Award). His work has been presented at The Public, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Lark, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Rep, Magic, Marin Theater Co., Ojai, and others. Martinez is an alumnus of New Dramatists. He teaches at Goddard College, Montclair University, and Primary Stages, as well as private workshops. Martinez has written for “Astroblast,” a children’s television show.
